Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber gave on Thursday an interview on Colorado Rapid’s Altitude TV where he was discussing what’s next for the MLS. In any interesting conversation about what the future will look like, Garber admitted the MLS is going into a different future and will need to change things.
It has been said previously the MLS is considering options on how and when to resume play once the season returns. In any interview to ESPN Garber confirmed that the Major League of Soccer is still contemplating options, where many options are still on the table. He also said that the MLS is looking closely at what other clubs are doing in other parts of the word, mainly European soccer clubs.
When asked about what the league knows, Garber said that things are still uncertain: “There is no timeline we have exposure to yet. Everyday things improve, and we make more progress understanding how things will look like.”
Like every other professional sport, the MLS is suffering from the break in training and games forced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Major League Soccer play was suspended two weeks into the 2020 Regular Season, and has recently extended the moratorium on matches until at least June 8th.
But despite the lack of clarity on when the MLS will resume play, or any other information that may somehow assist MLS directors to assess the future and make plans, for now Garber and MLS staff remain pretty confident about returning to play in 2020. They admit that they cannot say exactly how, and that things will look very different when Major League Soccer is back.
But Garber says that even in these times of uncertainty, it’s a great time to step back, reflect and come up with many different options that will be ready when the time will come for MLS matches to resume. “Yes, everything is one the table. It’s one of the benefits of having the time to step back and think about life going forward that might be a little different but in a positive way,” he said.
On how different things will be, Garber added: “Maybe we’ll be interacting with our players and our fans differently, maybe we’ll be thinking about technology and how we communicate.” Looking at the positives of these difficult times, he said: “All these things are empowering and now we have time…we’re spending 20-30% of our time thinking about the future, and that’s pretty exciting.”
As Commissioner of the MLS, Don Garber has always made effort to keep in touch with fans of Major League Soccer. And he also takes the fans into account as one of the league’s priorities when it comes to reshaping MLS and how it will look like when it returns.
“I’m less interested in being first [to resume playing], and more interested in being right. And taking advantage of some of the technology that is being developed, also getting out in front of our fans and doing it as quickly as we can.” Garber added, “The fan base for pro sports is going to be inundated with lots of great content, and we are going to go from zero to sixty pretty quick.”
