New York City Football Club, better known as NYCFC, was the 20th expansion club in the US Major League of Soccer. NYCFC is the first top-tier soccer franchise based New York City, but the second in the New York Metropolitan area, after fierce rivals New York Red Bulls.
Being a partnership between the City Football Group (owners of English Premier League Manchester City and several other City soccer clubs around the world) and the New York Yankees, the club named in 2013 former Manchester City midfielder and US international Claudio Reyna as its director of football operations.
In 2015, NYCFC launched its inaugural season in front of a packed Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Florida, the club played its first competitive MLS regular season match against fellow expansion team Orlando City SC. The game ended at a 1-1 tie.
Throughout its forming year, NYCFC has signed international football stars such as Spain’s David Villa, England’s Frank Lampard and Italy’s Andrea Pirlo.
