Owner of MLS expansion team Inter Miami CF, ex LA Galaxy and Manchester United legend, former England soccer captain David Beckham now also adds to his long list of honorary titles a line dedicated to his days as a warrior against the Coronavirus pandemic.
Along with other stars from sports and showbiz, Beckham announced that he will be taking part in the All In Challenge, as part of an effort to raise money for various COVID-19 related charities.
The challenge is a virtual tool which many celebrities are using as a way to raise money for non-profit organizations battling the coronavirus pandemic, where money is raised by famous celebrities promoting items, experiences, meet-and-greets etc. on the All In Challenge website. Items and experiences are then put up for actions, or given away in sweepstakes to fans that have placed bids.
In his video on the All In website, Beckham offered up the chance for one lucky winner to bring 4 of his friends and create a 5-a-side team, that will take on the Inter Miami CF owner’s own team 5-person team. “We want to support some brilliant charities who are doing some incredible work every single day, under such difficult circumstances,” Beckham said in the video.
After the game, the visiting team will be invited to lunch with Beckham, followed by a VIP tour of the new Inter Miami stadium. And there’s more, the visitors will also get the opportunity to watch Inter Miami CF in action in an MLS game from the owner’s suite, and each will receive a Major League Soccer Inter Miami Jersey.
“So, with my Inter Miami family, I want to offer you the chance to win a unique experience,” said the former LAFC player, and now MLS proud club owner Beckham. “You will get a VIP tour of our stadium to see the amazing facilities we have built for our new club,” he added.
Beckham was not the only MLS figure that joined the challenge. Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber also joined, presenting MLS fans with an opportunity to replace his name on the Major League Soccer game ball once the season resumes, as well as on the 2021 MLS All-star game ball. Also included in the prize is a VIP All-star trip.
Actor Will Ferrell, also co-owner of another MLS club, Los Angeles FC, joined in the money-raising action, and has invited one lucky fan to “enjoy the excitement of the finest team in the MLS.” Ferrell, who has starred in many famous movies including Elf, Anchorman and the Lego Movie, is offering the chance to join him in the owner’s suite for an LAFC match.
In addition to David Beckham’s participation in the All In Challenge, Inter Miami have been doing many things to support various different initiatives during these uncertain times.
The club temporarily modified their logo in encouragement of social distancing rules. The two herons on the Inter Miami badge, which are usually interlocked, were displayed separately on all of the clubs social media platforms. “COVID-19 has stopped the world in its tracks and as a result it has never been more important to heed to the advice and direction of the authorities to stand for unity and participation in social distancing,” said Chris Allan, Inter Miami’s Vice President of Community Engagement.
In Miami also lit up their stadium scoreboard in blue lights, as part of the #LightItBlue campaign (a campaign showing solidarity for front line healthcare workers), amongst other contributions made to charities.
And in addition, the MLS expansion club also partnered with globally-recognized DJ and producer David Guetta, in yet another bid to raise relief funds. The club and DJ are auctioning off a signed jersey displaying Guetta’s name and the number 7, with bids starting at $1,000 dollars. The jersey was shown by Guetta during the ‘United at Home’ concert (where he entertained local neighborhood residents from his rooftop), which Inter Miami live streamed on the club’s Facebook page.
Beckham played in Major League Soccer for the LA Galaxy, and made his Galaxy debut on 21st July 2007 in a 0-1 friendly loss Chelsea FC, an old-time English Premier League Rival of his. He went on to win 2 MLS Cup titles with LA Galaxy in 2011 and 2012. During this time at Major League Soccer, he received a purchase option from the league, allowing him to buy a future MLS franchise for $25 million. In 2014 Beckham decided to exercise his option, and Miami’s MLS expansion team was born.
The team’s name, Inter Miami CF (short for Club Internacional de Futbol Miami), was released on September 5th 2018, after being voted on by fans. The team made its MLS debut against LAFC on March, 1st 2020. Within only two games into its inaugural season, Inter Miami became me the number-one MLS ticket selling team. However, the rest of their matches that were due to be played, along with all other MLS fixtures, have since been postponed until further notice, due to effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
