Within week two of Major League Soccer, where the MLS Standings are just starting to form with points on the standings tables for both conferences, MLS Eastern Conference Philadelphia Union travelled across the country to the West Coast, to face Western Conference powerhouse LAFC.
Many thought that the Union will take a pretty bad beating from Carlos Vela and Co, which seemed to have been smashing every league record in the MLS 2019 regular season. But what everyone saw was a very different show. Instead of a one-sided demolition job of the hosts, the night was a great display of great goals from two strong, and kind of equal sides.
Philadelphia Union scored first when Sergio Santos fired a great shot across from outside the box, to score for the Union the first goal of the match (29’). LAFC’s star Carlos Vela equalized, converting a free kick from outside the box (38’).
The highlight of this match, and probably of the entire Week 2 of Major League Soccer was to come next, with Union’s Norwegian center back Jackob Glesnes taking a free kick, and finding LA’s net from 40 yards out (48’); sending Philly with a 2-1 lead into halftime.
The hosts came back from the break determined, and Uruguayan forward Diego Rossi equalled for LAFC again with a curled shot into the far post (49’). But the visitors came to do business, and kept fighting. Homegrown midfielder Branden Aaronson scored off a pass from Santos (69’), bringing the Union to a lead once more.
But the hosts managed to close the gap yet-again, for the third time on the night with centerback Eddie Seguara scoring a deflection from a corner kick (71’).
LAFC are playing against Mexican Cruz Azul next in the Concacaf league, and the Philadelphia Union will face MLS Western Conference San Jose Earthquakes.
